What is the Wi-Fi service all about?
• Wi-Fi, short for Wireless Fidelity, is a set of standards that enables you to access the Internet on your laptop (or other supported device) through wireless technology. You can connect to the Internet from anywhere within the range of the signal. Wi-Fi locations where wireless broadband Internet access is available are called hotspots.
BACK
Who provides the service?
• The City of Winnipeg has contracted with MTS Allstream Inc. to provide the service in selected City facilities. Any questions or concerns about the service should be directed to MTS Allstream Support staff, either by phone at 1-866-402-WIFI (9434) or through their website at mts.ca/WiFi.
• When speaking with the MTS support staff, reference the "City of Winnipeg - name of library branch you are currently in" as the hotspot name you are using.
BACK
Where can I access Wi-Fi?
• The Wi-Fi Internet service is currently available at all 20 branches of Winnipeg Public Library and the Pan Am Pool.
•
The service may not be available in all areas of each building.
• Every effort has been made to cover the adult areas and the meeting rooms, with the following exceptions:
--
Coverage at the Millennium LIbrary does not include meeting rooms,
large sections of the main floor, the parkade or the park.
--
Coverage at the Pan Am Pool is available in all areas except for the southeast side of the building.
BACK
When is the service available?
• The service is being provided during each facility's hours of operation. For more information, download the Library's hours of operation or visit the Pan Am Pool webpage.
BACK
Is there a charge for the service?
• No. The service is free of charge.
BACK
How do I access Wi-Fi?
• By using the City's access code. The access code is: wpgwifi
BACK
How do I find the City's access code?
• The access code is published at the top of this page (and again here: wpgwifi). Once you connect to the Wi-Fi service and open your web browser, the MTS Wi-Fi home page will be displayed. On the lower right-hand side of the screen, you will find links to both the Library and City websites. The direct link to the Library website is winnipeg.ca/library.
• You can also get the City's Wi-Fi access code by calling 311, by calling MTS customer support at 1-866-402-WIFI (9434), or by asking a staff member at any branch of Winnipeg Public Library and the Pan Am Pool.
BACK
Must I use the City's access code?
• No. If you have an MTS account or an account with a service that is an MTS partner, we prefer that you use that account information to log in as it reduces the ongoing cost to the City to provide the Wi-Fi service at no charge.
BACK
Does the access code expire?
• No. The City's access code provides you with unlimited access to the Internet. Keep in mind that you are still subject to the City's and to MTS Allstream's terms and conditions of Wi-Fi use.
* From time to time, the City may change the access code; in such cases, users will be notified of the change through the regular channels.
BACK
Who is paying for this service?
• This service is being funded by the City of Winnipeg through a contract agreement with MTS Allstream.
BACK
How do I get help using the service or when I'm having problems?
• Any questions or concerns about the service should be directed to MTS support staff, either by phone at 1-866-402-WIFI (9434), or through their website at mts.ca/WiFi. When you call the support number, please select option 3 for location. When speaking with the MTS support staff, reference the "City of Winnipeg - name of the facility you are currently in" as the hotspot location you are using.
BACK
What is the network name or security ID for the Wi-Fi service?
• When you scan for Wi-Fi networks at your location, select the strongest signal that has the "MTS Wi-Fi Hotspot" name. Depending on the location, you may see multiple networks listed with this name. This can happen when two or more hotspots are in close proximity to each other. Choosing the strongest signal will give you the best performance. If you don't get the home page with the City of Winnipeg logo, choose a different one. The service without the City logo may not be free.
BACK
When I open my browser I can't see the MTS Wi-Fi Hotspot login page. How do I get to it?
• If the access point does not redirect your browser automatically to the MTS login page, you may get a "Page not found" message. To get to the correct login page, type google.ca in the address line of your browser and hit the Enter key. The login page will now display.
BACK
Can I print from my laptop to a public printer?
• No. Printing is not available from the Wi-Fi system.
BACK
How do I log off the Wi-Fi service?
• You can’t explicitly log off the Wi-Fi service. The system will log you off after 15 minutes of inactivity.
BACK
How do I disconnect from the Wi-Fi service?
There are a number of ways to disconnect from the Wi-Fi Internet service:
- You can power off your wireless device, turn off your wireless card, or you can use your connection software to disconnect from the Wi-Fi service.
- Closing your browser is not sufficient indication of inactivity to the system. Your device may have processes running in the background, e.g., email, instant messenger, etc., that are still accessing the Internet.
