The Local History Room is open the same hours as the Millennium Library.
Explore Winnipeg and Manitoba history in the welcoming space of the new Local History Room, located on the third floor of the Library. Using a wide range of reference resources, our staff will assist customers with their browsing and research needs. Fiction by Manitoba authors past and present, community histories, local biographies, and nearby access to a variety of information on microfilm will be some of the featured resources.
Budding genealogists working on their family’s history will be able to use the Library’s collections and access the many genealogy and local history resources that are available on the Internet. Computer workstations in the Local History Room will offer a selection of the best and most interesting sites on the Web.
The Library is also working with historical and genealogical organizations to offer programs and workshops related to genealogy and local history. This new service is sure to be popular with researchers and browsers alike.
Henderson Directories
Henderson directories for Winnipeg are available from 1880 to 2000.
Manitoba Henderson Directories are available from 1877 to 1907 (in book form) and from 1876 to 1908 (on microfilm). The microfilm version includes information for British Columbia and the Northwest Territories.
Visit the City and Suburb: Housing in 20th Century Winnipeg Exhibit just outside the Local History Room. The exhibit was donated to the Library by the Winnipeg Real Estate Board. A companion document, History of Winnipeg Housing, prepared by Professor David Burley of the University of Winnipeg, is available in the Local History Room.
