Renovations
bullet The newly renovated space is bright and welcoming, accessible, and better able to meet the needs of today's library users.

Significant improvements include:
- New flooring, carpeting and painting throughout
- Replacement of the public service counters and furniture
- Creation of a designated teen area
- New lower shelving for greater accessibility
- A new and improved layout for collections, seating and computers
- An upgraded meeting room and a new tutorial room
- A new self-checkout counter

bullet Located at 1168 Dakota Street, Louis Riel Library is south of St. Vital Shopping Centre between Nova Vista and Paddington Streets. There is ample free parking in a lot.

bullet The closest southbound transit stop on Dakota Street is #50191 at the Dakota Community Club. The closest northbound transit stop is #50190, also at the Dakota Community Club.

Collections
bullet Louis Riel Library has a diverse collection of Adult, Teen and Children's books, magazines and audio-visual materials. The well-rounded collection appeals to and reflects the needs of the rapidly expanding community this branch serves.

bullet In addition to the large collection of English language children's books, the Children's department also houses a deposit of French materials from the St. Boniface Library. Louis Riel Library circulates approximately 340,000 per year.

bullet The 12,000 square feet of the Louis Riel Library includes an 80-seat meeting room available for rental. (More information about meeting rooms for public rental) Call 204-986-4573 to book. There is also a 40-seat study area and two lounge areas with easy chairs. The popular Children's area includes a Storytime Room for regular storytimes and school-age programs. The building has handicap-accessible washrooms and automatic doors. For customer convenience, a book chute for the return of materials after hours is located at the side of the building.

Call2Recycle Battery Initiative
Call2Recycle Battery Recycling

Winnipeg Public Library has joined the Call2Recycle battery recycling initiative. All libraries now have special recycling boxes where you can dispose of batteries and cell phones. Simply put your used batteries and cell phones in the bags provided and we'll do the rest.


History
bullet Louis Riel Library opened July 17, 1989. It is a unique structure designed by internationally-renowned Winnipeg architect Etienne Gaboury. It is designed to take advantage of the southern exposure and natural light with its high vaulted ceilings and windows.
