History The original Fort Garry Public Library first opened in 1956 in a 12' by 24' room in the municipal hall of the former Rural Municipality of Fort Garry. The current library on Pembina Highway was built in 1960.
Thanks to a bequest from the estate of Dr. A.W. Hogg, a sunken addition with a mezzanine as well as a children's area was added in 1967, increasing the branch's total area to 8,000 square feet.
Fort Garry Library is considered an excellent example of Modernist architecture, characterized by its flat roof, cubic shape and open flowing floor plan.
