Charleswood Library is a one-floor, accessible facility with study and meeting space, a bright children's area including a Family Literacy Playground, a teen area, fireplace lounge, and a room for library programming. The interior design reflects the nature that surrounds the Charleswood community, including a "Poet-Tree" (dubbed Edgar) in the children's area. A book return, available 24/7, is located at the main entrance to the library.
The first Charleswood Library was opened in 1964 in Dieppe School. In 1966, the Library moved to the former muncipal building of the Rural Municipality of Charleswood after the new Municipal Office was built next door.
In 1976, Charleswood Library joined the Winnipeg Public Library system, and an expansion of the building completed in 1983 brought its size to 4,914 sq. ft. - one of the smallest branches in the system. The popular little library provided avid readers with access to a wide array of collections, however the Library was limited in options for programs and events due to a lack of meeting or program space. Study and reading spaces were extremely limited.
In 2014, work began on a new library as part of the Library's Redevelopment Plan to meet the needs of the residents of Charleswood. A new site at the nearby Charleswood Square mall was selected, offering greater parking and more than doubling the size of the facility to 14,000 sq. ft. This new Charleswood Library opened on January 19, 2015.
